I think we all know about the educational brand toys that are available for children that have been on the market for years. Kazoo Toys is a speciality store originally started as Kazoo and Company. It was founded in a single location in the Cherry Creek North shopping area in Denver, Colorado in 1980, and was purchased by it’s current owner, Diana Nelson, in 1998. This owner was a divorced stay-at-home mom with a retail background. She decided to go into business because she needed to support her small children.

In 1999 she took Kazoo to the Internet targeting parents and grandparents seeking educational, non-violent toy options. The website generates revenue of over $2 million per year.

The people who first opened the store were committed to providing a completely different toy shopping experience with a completely different type of product. And there are so many stories nowadays of toy recalls and bad toy quality.

Diana says she gets calls all the time from parents who are looking for an alternative to the unsafe toys they’ve gotten from other retailers. For this reason, none of their toy selections has ever been subject to a recall of any kind.

Diana still runs the single brick-and-mortar location in Denver, Kazoo and Company — it’s 11,000 square feet on two floors, and they have about 60,000 items there. The website, only has about 5,000 of those in stock.

Next year, they’ll be launching Kazoo Global, which will introduce the franchising side of the business.
